2004 South
African Strongman Championships
EVENT 2: Log Lift for
Maximum Weight
Next up was the old strongman favourite, the log lift. A rising bar principle was used. The bar progressively got loaded heavier from the starting weight of 120kg. Athletes were allowed 60 seconds to complete a lift. If you failed, you were disqualified with your previous best attempt being registered. Simple. There were no real upsets here with Dave Cooks taking an expected victory in fine style with 160kg (352lb), followed 5kg behind by a well known log specialist, Stephan Claassen on 155kg (341lb). Johan van Huyssteen got joint third place with the best log of his life at 150kg (330lb). Ettiene definitely worked hard on his shoulders during the last year and as a result his log lift improved substantially, earning him a solid 150kg in shared third place. Below is our winner, big man Dave Cooks on his penultimate lift of 155kg (341lb).
Here's a graph of how things worked out during the log lift....
The point standings after the second event were as follows:
The first three positions remained the same as after the first event except that Koffie dropped further behind the leaders points-wise. The guys that gained positions in this event were me, Dave and Stephan with Dave being the biggest gainer going up 5 places from ninth to fourth. The guy who lost the most ground here was Rory who moved down four places. Below are some random pictures of the log lift.
