2004 South
African Strongman Championships
EVENT 4: Atlas Stones
Normal strongman rules applied here with
four stones ranging from 120kg (264lb) to 164kg (360lb) having to be loaded
onto pedestals. The stones were placed a few meters away from the pedestals
and had to be carried to the pedestals first.
If the yoke walk was hard, then this event
was a killer with only three guys managing to load all four stones in the
allocated time! The big upset here was that the two top guys after the yoke
walk, Ettiene and Johan, failed to load the fourth stone. Ettiene had a nasty
fall on the fourth stone with the stone falling right on his chest. Luckily he
was okay but he was unable to load the final stone after that.
Dave Cooks was absolutely unstoppable here
loading all four stones in an amazing 25.12 seconds. He made it look really
easy. Koffie fought back for a very good second position on 46.22 seconds and
as usual I was slow as ever on the stones, coming in at a leisurely 53.66
seconds. I had no real problems, though, and loaded all four stones without
drama. Below I'm loading the 164kg (360lb) stone.

Here's a graph with the results of the
atlas stones. You'll notice that I have plotted everybody's time with the
number of stones that they were able to load in that time and then sorted it
down from four stones to one.

The overall point standings after this
event:

Despite Ettiene's mishap, his lead was big enough to
sustain his first position. Dave's brilliant run moved him into second
position ahead of Johan, who held that spot for the first three events. I kept
fourth overall. The guys who gained positions apart from those already
mentioned were Koffie and Rory, who gained two spots. The guys who slipped
back were Stephan, Hennie and Willem.
